How did they craft such beautiful silver rings?

How did they craft such beautiful silver rings?

Our Miao silver rings are made by hand by experienced, skilled artisans. The unique techniques these craftsmen use to craft silver rings have been handed down for generations. Making a single unique silver ring involves dozens of steps.

Melting pure silver is the first step. Traditionally a big stove made of charcoal is used to melt silver. Today, silversmiths have invented a small, light electric tool that can bring the silver to temperatures over 1,000 degrees Celcius.

The searing silver liquid is then poured into an iron slot to harden into a solid silver bar. Forceps are used to take the bar out of the slot and it’s hammered into the required shape. Many Miao rings are crafted with silver slices thin as a piece of paper. The band is usually made of wider silver pieces.

Working with fine silver threads

Working with fine silver threads

How do they work with such thin slices to craft silver rings? Only using a pair of scissors and forceps, the Miao artisans can twist the slices into intricate patterns that bring out vivid birds, flowers, and animals. Some craftsmen always wear a magnifying glass just to see the fine pieces on their silver rings.

Sometimes hair-like silver threads are thrown into the mix when crafting silver rings. To make silver threads, Miao artisans use a steel sheet with 60 different round holes. The steel board is put onto a short, round wooden post. The silversmith steps onto the board and uses a pair of pliers to pull silver through the holes. Just like that, an ideal silver thread is created.

To work with such fine silver slices or threads is very hurtful to one's eyes. That's why lots of Miao silversmiths have to retire before they’re 50 years old.

Traditional Miao silver rings usually have a wide band that covers almost half of the finger. These bands almost always feature beautiful engravings of flowers and animals.

To engrave patterns on the silver, a rosin board is used to hold the pieces in place. Artisans heat the black rosin to soften it, and then the silver is easily placed on top. When the rosin cools down, the silver ring is stuck in the surface.

Miao silver rings often feature different pieces connected together, so the almost perfect soldering of tiny pieces is strictly demanded. Inspecting a Miao silver ring, you’ll never find any small, ugly bubbles of solder. The finished work looks so neat and clean.

Washing is the last step. Immersing the handmade rings into phosphoric acid for a few minutes can remove stains from its surface and makes the silver rings brighter.

As an ethnic minority group in China, the Miao are characterized by their unique culture and lifestyle, including their colorful costumes and beautiful silver jewelry. Handmade, unique silver rings are an important part of this tradition.

Miao silver rings usually have a wide band that covers almost half the length of their fingers. Some Miao women like to wear eight silver rings, leaving only their thumbs bare.

The surfaces of their rings are engraved with beautiful patterns like flowers, birds, butterflies, and plants, which often relate to their history and culture.

Legends of Chinese silver rings

Legends of Chinese silver rings

As early as 4,000 years ago, Chinese people started to wear special rings, and later silver rings became popular. Here are some theories on the development of engagement rings and promise rings.

Old Instinct: Take a woman and marry her

In ancient times, men from different tribes often stole women of other tribes and aimed to marry them. When a man got a woman, he would put shackles on her. As time went on, the restraints turned into engagement rings. Putting a silver ring onto a woman's finger meant she was owned by her man.

Religion: Worshipping the sun and the moon

For centuries, Chinese rings have symbolized the sun that gives people warmth and protection. People have been wearing silver rings to pray for a safe, peaceful, and happy life. In the past, the groom would usually wear a gold ring, while bride would wear a silver engagement ring before a wedding. Gold stood for the sun, and a silver ring represented the moon.

We are proud to bring you excellent silver rings from the professional Miao silversmiths themselves.

The unique silver rings we offer here are a bit different from those the local Miao women wear, and are more suitable to western styles.

99.9% pure silver rings: Little star

99.9% pure silver ring: having a quality line no other

The Miao silver rings on this site are entirely handmade out of 99.9% pure silver. Compared with standard 92.5% sterling silver rings, 99.9% pure silver is much softer, whiter, and more difficult to craft into silver jewelry

The biggest difference between our silver rings and sterling silver rings is that pure silver has a far more appealing color. It's brighter, whiter, and no signs of impure metals can be seen. If you compare two silver rings, you’ll immediately see which one is 99.9% pure silver and which one is sterling silver.
